Spanish Reading Beads and Activities

In order to better support our dual language students from basics to advanced pace, I am implementing a Reading Bead project in my classroom. Students will be able to read from a variety of texts provided on here, and complete one of the report forms, in order  to earn beads. There are different colored beads that go by the number of points that the student earns. Beads are to be kept on a shoe lace or a long string of yarn in order to avoid losing beads. I will upload the stories, along with a variety of report formats, or activities that can be done in order to earn beads. Students in the past have truly enjoyed earning their beads and I know not only will our students enjoy earning beads but will develop a more rounded native Spanish vocabulary as well as applying higher order thinking skills from our advanced texts. Please check regularly for more updates!

Attached are a link to a PDF where there are a variety of activities that can be done with a story. Some of the activities are only for informational texts, and some are for fiction texts. Please look carefully to make sure you are doing an activity that goes with the reading.
In addition for 1 point students can make:
* A Book Report Bookmark- include the title, an illustration, the name of the main character, and what you liked most about the story. Rate the story 1-5 Stars.

Here are some wonderful examples from our student's collection. She has done a fabulous job! 5 Point Option for Fiction:

* The Story Map option listed above in the PDF, is a great tool to reinforce what we have learned about in class so far, we discussed the "elementos de un cuento" or the elements of a story. Students can practice identifying the setting, characters, and plot ( beginning, middle, and end).

* The Character cube is also another wonderful option as students are practicing describing characters, and along with describing characters they are able to apply those characteristics to real life feelings, and emotions. In addition, research has shown that children who read fiction stories tend to show more empathy towards others.

5 Points Options for Non- Fiction/ Informational Texts
* The Information Cube is a fantastic tool as students start to learn about different topics of interest, they are able to identify and share information they find relevant as well as research up to date information on that subject. This is definitely a real world skill, as professionals we are constantly having to update our knowledge in our professions, and about concepts that effect us in our daily lives.

I really have enjoyed seeing our students' projects. A popular project has been creating dioramas. I would like to share some of the ones that have been created so far. Amazing!
